Video: The Future Internet - Service Web 3.0
»
The Future Internet, an initiative driven by the European Union, has become a prime research focus of STI International and the Service Web 3.0 project. In order to explain, promote, and attract new contributors, we created a video to be viewed by stakeholders, who may be non-experts, in a new generation Internet. The video outlines the basic themes of the European Union's Future Internet initiative. These include: an Internet of Services, where services are ubiquitous; an Internet of Things where in principle every physical object becomes an online addressable resource; a Mobile Internet wher...
Google Announces Changes to its Search Ranking Alg...
»
Hot off the press, Google recently announced changes to its Search Ranking Algorithm, code named "Penguin". While they haven't specifically mentioned what the changes entail, however Google made it pretty clear that it’s about targeting those violating its quality guidelines. Here’s an exact quote from the announcement: In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. There was - and frankly, still is - a lot of speculation about how to ...

Video: Let's take back the Internet!

In this powerful talk from TEDGlobal, Rebecca MacKinnon describes the expanding struggle for freedom and control in cyberspace, and asks: How do we design the next phase of the Internet with accountability and freedom at its core, rather than control? She believes the internet is headed for a "Magna Carta" moment when citizens around the world demand that their governments protect free speech and their right to connection.

One of the biggest changes to the Internet domain name system is coming. On June 20, the governing body for Internet domain names, ICANN, approved the final rules to allow organisations to register their own name at the top of the Internet name hierarchy. So as well as .com or .com.au, in future you’ll likely see .shop, .bank, .hotel as well as company brands like .canon, .deloitte or .hitachi. Organisations may register keywords that relate to their products, such as .camera or .printer. Cities are considering their own Internet name - for example .sydney or .london.

So you’ve spent thousands of dollars building an ecommerce website, submitted your site to all the major search engines, created some interesting content, populated your online store with your products and services and started promoting your site on the big, popular social networking sites. You’re getting plenty of traffic and you’ve got some products you’re sure people will love if only they’d give them a chance. Just one problem - no one’s actually buying what you’re trying to sell. So what’s the problem? If you’re happy with your traffic numbers but not so happy w...
Video: Artfully visualizing our humanity

Artist Aaron Koblin takes vast amounts of data - and at times vast numbers of people - and weaves them into stunning visualizations. From elegant lines tracing airline flights to landscapes of cell phone data, from a Johnny Cash video assembled from crowd-sourced drawings to the "Wilderness Downtown" video that customizes for the user, his works brilliantly explore how modern technology can make us more human.
Video: Beware online "filter bubbles"
»
As web companies strive to tailor their services (including news and search results) to our personal tastes, there's a dangerous unintended consequence: We get trapped in a "filter bubble" and don't get exposed to information that could challenge or broaden our worldview. Eli Pariser argues powerfully that this will ultimately prove to be bad for us and bad for democracy.
